A Country Girl

[In a Theatre World]

Ashleigh grew up on a dairy farm 30 minutes north-east of Warwick. She started drumming age 10 at Allora State School, before moving to Toowoomba's Fairholme College for high school. As a teenager, Ashleigh loved drumming and live music. For year 10 work Experience Ashleigh wanted to go to a radio station, however, found herself at Empire Theatre having never watched a theatre performance in her life. During her short time on work experience, Ashleigh got to have her first glimpse into theatre. She then proceeded to join her school's sound and lighting club that year. Continuing to drum through high school, Ashleigh considered drumming as a career but was worried about it's stability. Looking through universities degrees, Ashleigh stumbled across QUT's Bachelor of Fine Arts Technical Production. The thought crossed her mind, 'someone's gotta do this sort of work so why not me?' And here she is completing her capstone unit of Technical Production. During her time at QUT, she has had the opportunity to complete a mechanist secondment in 2019 at Creative Generation: State Schools On Stage, where she found her love for mech work. In Semester 2 2020, Ashleigh worked as a Site Design Intern at Brisbane Festival. She also completed two units in Music Production, and took on two Sound Design roles, two Sound Operator roles, Head of Sound and Vision, and Head of Set. Ashleigh then went on to gain a Stage Technician position at QPAC in December 2019 where she began to kindle her love for flying and all things staging.

Due to Covid, Ashleigh has postponed her study to complete two more internship units, and will graduate in July 2021. Ashleigh hopes in the future to work as a mechanist on large-scale musicals, and continue her hobby of sound designing.
